In 1997, Peled's 13-year-old niece Smadar, daughter of his sister Nurit Peled-Elhanan, was murdered in a Palestinian suicide terror attack in Jerusalem. Despite this experience, Peled was capable of synthesizing a path through the myriad causes of terrorism to determine that the 1948-founded modern state of Israel holds most of the blame for the conflicts in the region.
